Shopkins: Chef Club – review

Little Miss H loves Shopkins.

She first became interested in them after watching a number of YouTube videos of the toys being opened and played with. It is amazing how much enjoyment a three-year old can get from watching someone open a toy!

She then moved on to watching the Shopkins animated webisodes which can be found on the Shopkins YouTube channel. If we let her then she would be very happy to watch these webisodes for hours.

So when Universal contacted me and asked if we wanted to review SHOPKINS: CHEF CLUB, the first ever film to include the characters from Shopville, I knew that my answer had to be yes.

If you are wondering what I am talking about then please allow me to explain.

Shopkins are small, collectible, grocery themed character toys. Each Shopkin has a cute little face, their own personality and a unique name.

They are the perfect toy for little people to fall in love with. And Little Miss H is not the first child to become obsessed with this worldwide craze.

SHOPKINS: CHEF CLUB – our review

The first ever Shopkins film marks the transition of several Shopkin’s fan favourites, Kooky Cookie, Apple Blossom, Lippy Lips and Cheeky Chocolate, from YouTube webisodes to DVD & Digital Download. The storyline will focus on new Shoppie in town PeppaMint and her attempts to win over the friendship of the other Shoppies Bubbleisha, Jessicake and Donatina with the help of their Shopkin friends. With the introduction of a cast of new Shopkins, new songs and a range of quirky costumes, it’s just the right ingredients for a cartload of laughs!

Last Friday afternoon, while Little Mister H was snoozing, Little Miss H and I excitedly sat down to watch a preview of SHOPKINS: CHEF CLUB. And to mark the occasion I had bought a big bag of popcorn and we snuggled under our favourite blanket.

And I am pleased to say that Little Miss H loved the film.

At 44 minutes long it is the perfect length. Little Miss H often gets fidgety and loses interest when films are too long. But SHOPKINS: CHEF CLUB had her enthralled from the first moment to the last.

It is great that this film features many of Little Miss H’s favourite Shopkins characters. Including her absolute favourite, Kooky Cookie. There was a moment when Little Miss got very upset as she was convinced that Kooky was in danger. But that soon passed and we were able to enjoy the rest of the film.

Little Miss H loves music and a catchy tune. And SHOPKINS: CHEF CLUB contains the fabulous “Tell me what’s cooking?”. We’ve been humming this pop-tastic song for days.

The characters in the film are fun and engaging.

I loved shy PeppaMint who speaks hiding behind her clipboard but embraces her inner Tay Tay to sing Tell me what’s cooking. And ditsy Donatina who at one point can be found counting individual strands of spaghetti to make sure that she has the 100 strands needed for a recipe.

But my favourite character, was the new Shopkin, Nina Noodles. I loved the look of disdain on her face. And her lack of enthusiasm at being a backing singer for PeppaMint during Tell me what’s cooking? did make me chortle.

The plot is very easy for little ones to understand. You could argue that it is too easy and can be boring at times.

But overall, Little Miss H loved the film. It kept her engaged for the whole 44 minutes. And it has helped to fuel her Shopkins obsession.

SHOPKINS: CHEF CLUB (certificate: U) is now available to buy on DVD and on Digital Download. DVDs include a limited edition Kooky Cookie toy (while stocks last).

SHOPKINS: CHEF CLUB at-home premiere

On Thursday 27th October at 4pm, Little Miss H and I will be holding an at-home premiere of the new film. And Universal are asking Shopkins fans up and down the country to take part too.

If you would like to get involved then Shopkins have produced a fun premiere pack to help you have a fabulous time at your premiere party.

The premiere pack includes:

  • Downloadable invitations
  • SHOPKINS: CHEF CLUB hats
  • Poppy Corn popcorn cones
  • A premiere check list
  • And a welcome sign that you can personalise.

And don’t forget the most important part of your at-home premiere pack – the SHOPKINS: Chef Club DVD or Digital download.

I will be busy tweeting and sharing photographs during our at-home premiere. If you want to see what Little Miss H and I are getting up to then please follow the hashtag #shopkinschefclub.

Do you have a child that is obsessed with Shopkins? Which is their favourite Shopkin? I would love to hear in the comments.

Hugs

I had not heard of shopkins until a recent shopping trip to Tesco – Looks amazing.
I asked Hayden if he liked it and surprisingly he did. Will see what he thinks of the DVD then gets some bits for Christmas.
    Thanks for this review hun

Looks interesting. I can see my little girl going crazy for them once she’s old enough.

I’ve heard of Shopkins so much in the last few months. It’s definitely something that’s becoming HUGE. I have a feeling it’s something my little girl will be so interested in when she’s older. The film sounds like it’s the perfect length for little ones. I hope you enjoy your premier. xx

I found this very educational. Having 2 boys aged 8 and 10 I’ve not come across shopkins before but I’ll certainly be introducing my 2 year old madam to them as I think they’ll be right up her street. Great and informative review. Thanks x

Little Miss H has only discovered them quite recently but I can see them featuring in her letter to Father Christmas. The movie is great. If Sophia likes Shopkins then I am sure she will enjoy the film! Little Miss really loves the theme song. And I can’t stop humming it. Thanks for your comment lovely. Hugs Lucy xxxx
