Decluttering is a big craze at the moment and everybody is getting in on the act. It’s a great way to open up more space in the house, make a little extra money by selling things that you don’t need and it can even improve your mindset and make you happier. On the face of it, it seems pretty simple. Just get all of the stuff that you don’t need and chuck it out or sell it. But there’s a little more to it than that. If you don’t declutter the right way, you won’t see any of the positives of it. That’s why it’s important that you avoid these mistakes when you’re clearing out the house.

Waiting Until It’s Necessary

When most people start decluttering, they do it because their house is packed to bursting point with old junk that they don’t need. At that point, it seems like a monumental task and it’ll put you off doing it in the first place. If you don’t want to spend days and days clearing out all of your old clutter, you need to start doing it as you go along. Prevention is key here, so that means not buying things that aren’t absolutely necessary in the first place. Beyond that, be more aware of the things in the house and if you spot something that you don’t need, just get rid of it there and then rather than waiting for it all to pile up.

Rubbish Removal

Getting everything out of the house is the first step, but you’ve got to do something with it afterwards. If you’re having a serious clearout, you’re going to have a lot of rubbish to get rid of and it might not fit in your normal bin. If you don’t make arrangements to get all of the rubbish cleared away, you’re not really decluttering, you’re just moving it around and piling it up.

Quantity Is Everything

When you’re decluttering, it’s not just a numbers game. But a lot of people think that quantity is everything when they’re having a clearout and they end up chucking out a load of stuff that they actually need at some point. Holding onto things on the off chance that you need them is always a bad idea but you’ve got to have limits. For example, if you haven’t used something in 6 months, you can probably do without it. But don’t throw something out because you haven’t used it for a couple of weeks. If you’re too ruthless, you’re going to end up buying back a load of the useful stuff that you threw away and that’s just a massive waste of money.

You wouldn’t think that decluttering would be that difficult but there are actually quite a lot of things that you can get wrong.
