At the end of 2017, I began to listen to a podcast by Gretchen Rubin, the author of The Happiness Project. In one of her podcasts, she and her sister created a list of things that they wanted to do the following year. It included finding the ultimate black dress and getting to bed earlier. I decided to write my own list and so I sat down and wrote 18 for 2018.
As it is now 2019, it is time to revisit my list and see how I did. Ummmm… not as well as I could have done. I think that a key lesson is to print off my list for 2019 and have it somewhere I’ll see it daily. Anyway, here is my 18 for 2018, revisited.
18 for 2018 – Revisited
1. Attend a festival
Little Miss H and I attended Elderflower Fields Festival back in May and had a wonderful time. In fact, we had so much fun that we are planning to go back this year.
2. Read 12 books in 2018
I really didn’t think I would meet this but I managed to read 15 books in 2018. Considering before this, I had managed to read 1 book since Little Miss H was born I am very proud of myself.
3. Go to bed by 23:30
This was one of my most important goals for 2018. I wasn’t getting enough sleep and it was having an affect on the other aspects of my life. But I’m pleased to say that on most nights last year, I was in bed by 23:30 or earlier.
4. Go away for our 10th wedding anniversary
We went away (without the kids) to the New Forest and had a wonderful time. We filled our weekend with walks, visiting castles, pub lunches, gorgeous meals and we really enjoyed spending time together as a
5. Throw a party for my 40th birthday
Mr H threw a fabulous party for my 40th birthday. He went to so much trouble and had thought of everything – there was even a craft table for the kids. I loved every minute of it. And it was lovely to be surrounded by
6. Take part in a 5km charity race
This didn’t happen. I did start running again but it has been really slow progress and I’m still quite a way from running 5km.
7. Plan my time
I did this to some extent. I felt less anxious and more in control when I planned my time. So I definitely need to make sure that I’m doing this in 2019.
8. Find a babysitter
We did find a babysitter and she is lovely and the kids love her. Hopefully this means we’ll be able to have more date nights this year.
9. Learn how to use the manual settings on my camera
I failed to do this. I do think that my photography has improved over the year. But I am still relying on the auto settings for the camera.
10. Do 30 minutes exercise every day
I think that this was quite an ambitious goal. And it is not surprising that I haven’t done that well. However, I have increased the amount of exercise I’m doing and I’ve found a love for kettlebell workouts.
11. Take a day off every week
This started well but then I stopped taking a day off once a week. I really think that I need to do this once again as it was really good for both me and the family.
12. Take Little Mister H swimming
I have been terrible at this. I think we have managed to go swimming three times during the year. Awful! But he loves swimming so I still think that I need to take him more and also look into swimming lessons.
13. Saying Goodbye
This was in relation to saying goodbye to the babies we lost and moving on with my life. As I have recently been diagnosed with PTSD, as a result of the miscarriages, it is clear that I need to do this now more than ever.
14. Learn to drive again
This just wasn’t the right year to do this. But I’m sure I’ll learn to drive again at some point soon.
15. Get a tattoo
I still haven’t got the tattoo. Although, I’m still thinking about it. I did however get my ears pierced (for the first time) two weeks before my 40th birthday.
16. Find the perfect skincare
I’m definitely discovering what does and doesn’t work for my skin. But I’m still not sure that I have found the perfect skincare routine.
17. More days out with the family
18. Gratitude list
My plan was to write a daily or weekly gratitude list. Well, I didn’t manage it. However, I have restarted writing my Finding Happiness and Chasing Rainbows posts which act as a list of things that make me smile.
So there you have it! I didn’t do too badly really. I can’t wait to share with you my list for 2019 and see how I get on ticking those goals off.
